Common questions

Is renoco.ca free?
Yes. Every calculator is free and there is no signup, email capture, or contractor lead form. We do not ask for your address, phone number, or payment details, and we do not sell leads.
Are these estimates contractor quotes?
No. They are planning ranges built from published cost data and multipliers we publish in full. Only a contractor who has seen your property can give you a quote. Every result on this site is labelled as an estimate and shows which quarter's pricing it is based on.
Which provinces does it cover?
All ten: Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. Cost estimates use regional multipliers anchored to Statistics Canada renovation and construction price data. Permit rules, contractor licensing, and land transfer tax are modelled per province, with the deepest local detail currently for Ontario.
Can this tell me whether I need a permit?
No tool can. We flag the scopes that commonly require a permit and tell you which authority in your province issues them, so you know when and where to ask. Only your municipality can confirm what applies to your property.
How do you handle 2026 material price swings?
Every estimate is tagged with the pricing quarter it was built from, currently Q3 2026, and we review the tables quarterly rather than annually. Results also flag which parts of your specific budget are exposed to fast-moving prices, such as imported cabinets or metal components, so a higher contractor quote does not come as a surprise.
Can I use my own contractor rates?
Yes. Every calculator has an advanced panel where you can replace the built-in material and labour rates, plus a field to check a real quote against your planning range.
