Data and content changelog

When a rebate closes, a figure turns out to be wrong, or a guide changes in a way that matters, it is recorded here with the date and the pages affected.

Corrections are made as soon as we confirm them against the body that publishes the fact, then listed here. Read how content is reviewed and how the cost data is built. Found something we missed? Report an error.

2.1: Sources, review bylines and four new guides

Every guide now lists the sources behind it, with the date each one was checked, and says who reviewed it. Figures we could not trace to a source are now labelled as rough estimates or removed.

What changed

  • Added a Sources list to all 39 guides. Each entry names the publisher, links the page, says which fact it backs, and shows the date we re-checked it.
  • Added a review byline and a last-reviewed date to every guide, linked to a new page explaining who reviews the content and how.
  • Added this changelog so corrections are public.
  • New guide: renovation scams, deposits and progress payments, with illustrative $30,000, $75,000 and $150,000 payment schedules.
  • New guide: what to tell your home insurer before a renovation, including vacancy, condo improvements, and flood versus sewer backup coverage.
  • New guide: what an EnerGuide home evaluation is, what NRCan says it costs, and when to book it.
  • New guide: testing for radon before finishing a basement, using Health Canada's guideline and testing advice.
  • Waterproofing guide: corrected the Toronto basement flooding subsidy. You apply after the work, within two years, but the contractor needs a City of Toronto business licence and a backwater valve needs a permit. It previously said to apply before the work.
  • Home inspection guide: replaced city-level construction cost figures we could not confirm with Statistics Canada's 2.3 percent national residential figure, and attributed the resale price drop to TRREB's GTA data.
  • Secondary suite guide: kept only the CMHC suite refinance terms the federal government published (90 percent of post-renovation value, up to $2 million, 30-year amortization) and removed debt-service and credit-score figures we could not confirm.
  • Heat pump guide: removed a 6 July 2026 B.C. program date and a 2024 Greener Homes Grant closing date we could not confirm on the program pages.
  • Deck, window, flooring and DIY guides: replaced figures and claims we could not trace with sourced ones or labelled them as estimates. The ESA licence number is no longer described as starting with 7, and the Quebec RBQ wording now matches the RBQ's own.
  • Asbestos, electrical panel, waterproofing, condo, kitchen and quick-win guides: trade price ranges without a published source are now labelled as rough planning estimates.

2.0.1: Guide and cost-label corrections

Follow-up corrections to the heat pump, secondary suite and painting guides, clearer permit labels, and a re-check of basement and heat pump costs.

What changed

  • Heat pump guide updated to the programs that are actually open, including the pending National Heat Pump Rebate.
  • Secondary suite guide: the CMHC suite refinance is now marked status uncertain, with a note to confirm with your lender.
  • Secondary suite guide: the multigenerational home renovation tax credit now notes that the 2026 figures are likely 14 percent, up to $7,000, until CRA publishes them.
  • Painting guide figures now match the calculator: Ottawa $4.40 per sq ft and $4,400 for a 1,000 sq ft main floor, GTA $4.85 and $4,850, and $8,250 for a 2,000 sq ft whole home.
  • Permit allowances are now labelled permit plus design and drawings. The calculator numbers did not change.
  • Basement finishing and heat pump cost anchors were re-checked against published sources, with no change.
  • The next cost data review is now due 31 January 2027.
  • Rebates: the Ontario Home Renovation Savings deadline badge now applies only to the assessment bundle, not the whole program.
  • Rebates: corrected the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program link and provinces, adding Manitoba.
  • Rebates: the Ontario New Home Affordability Payment now shows its 31 March 2027 deadline.
